Turkey’s behaviour will determine whether the forthcoming Greek-Turkish contacts will take place, Αlternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said on Monday in an interview with the radio station “Parapolitika”.
In particular, Varvitsiotis noted that the visit of the Foreign Minister (Nikos Dendias) to Turkey will take place as long as there are no serious challenges, which will lead to the cancellation of this visit.
He added that the Greek side does not intend to cancel it, but this – as he said – will be judged by the behaviour of our neighbours, who should show the appropriate seriousness. He referred to the provocative posts from the Turkish side the day before yesterday, which do not cultivate a good climate.
Asked about the recent visit of the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council to Ankara, the Alternate Foreign Minister stressed that “Sofagate was visually traumatic for the European leadership”, which provoked a reaction from the European People’s Party and the leader of the EPP Central Committee Manfred Weber, however, stressed that the messages sent by the European leadership to Turkey were completely identical to those requested by the European Council.
