‘Venizelos’ metro station in Thessaloniki to be delivered by 2022, says KAS

The first metro station in Thessaloniki will be delivered to the public by 2022 at the latest along with the surrounding archaeological site, Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS) said on Tuesday during a meeting.

KAS members approved two technical studies presented by Thessaloniki metro director Giorgos Konstantinidis, which concern the protection of important later antiquity and Byzantine findings discovered under Egnatia Street during excavations to construct the station.

As stated at the meeting, the next technical steps which will be followed include the construction of micro-piles to support the two shafts, the continuation of the excavation that has already begun in the area, the temporary backfilling of the central part of the pit and the creation of a ceiling plate that will houses the central section and the shafts.
