Week-long hunting ban decided due to extreme weather conditions

Alternate Environment and Energy Minister Sokratis Famellow on Wednesday signed an order for a blanket ban on all hunting for a week, due to the extremely cold weather conditions. He said the order will be published in the government gazette, while a circular will be sent to all the appropriate forestry and other agencies.

Greece’s Ornithological Society had earlier warned that bans on a local or regional level did not provide adequate protection to birds seeking shelter from the bad weather, since these did not cover the areas where the birds had sought refuge but those where there was heavy snow. They noted that hunting on a mass scale was taking place in the areas where birds went, since hunters found easy and plentiful prey at a time when the birds needed peace in order to feed and keep up their strength.
