Firefighters are struggling to contain a wildfire that broke out on the island of Spetses on Tuesday afternoon and stop it from reaching houses, the fire department said.
The blaze, which is burning a pine forest in the area of Aghii Anargyri, spread rapidly due to the strong winds and has developed several fronts. Firefighting forces operating on the island were boosted and currently number 30 firemen with 12 vehicles, one crew on foot, four helicopters and two aircraft, while one more team is expected to join them shortly.
No injuries or damages have been reported until now, the fire department added.
A separate fire that started in Anavyssos, a coastal town 34 kilometers southeast of Athens, was brought under control, the fire department said. Twenty-five firemen with 11 vehicles and one group on foot are operating in the area where the flames consumed low vegetation. Authorities said there is no danger for the nearby houses.
The wildfire in Kalyvia Thorikou, a mere 3 kilometers from Anavyssos, which started on Monday is still burning low vegetation.
